The Free Library

This is the Free Library of Philadelphia. This was the nation's first free library. Before this, usually only those in academia or those with a lot of money were able to buy books and keep collections. Back then, your average person would be lucky a) to be able to read and b) to be able to purchase even one book in their lifetime becuase they were very expensive and considered a luxury.
